چکیده

Our present knowledge in the metabolism of citric acid in vitro in animal tissues is derived almost entirely either from experiments with tissue preparations possessing both synthesizing and utilizing properties regarding this acid, or from experiments carried out by means of crude preparations of one or other of the enzyme systems involved in citric acid metabolism, therefore without dynamic connections with other metabolic pathways leading to the formation of citric acid. The aim of the experiments summarized in this paper has been to obtain heart muscle preparations which favour the formation of citric acid but do not utilize citric acid, so that it could accumulate in quantities sufficient to be estimated. Although some intermediate steps are still rather obscure, starting with pyruvic acid as the principal precursor of citric acid it is possible to consider two pathways of formation:

Quantitative assessment of anaplerosis from propionate in pig heart in vivo.

Normal cardiac metabolism requires continuous replenishment (anaplerosis) of catalytic intermediates of the citric acid cycle. Little is known about the quantitative aspects of propionate as a substrate of in vivo anaplerosis; therefore, we measured the rate of propionate entry into the citric acid cycle in hearts of anesthetized pigs. [U-(13)C(3)]propionate (0.25 mM) was infused in a coronary ...

Indexing tricarboxylic acid cycle flux in intact hearts by carbon-13 nuclear magnetic resonance.

Although the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle is the prime means of carbon metabolism for energy generation in normal myocardium, the noninvasive quantification of TCA cycle flux in intact cardiac tissues is difficult. A novel approach for estimating citric acid cycle flux using 13C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) is presented and evaluated experimentally by comparison with measured myocardial o...

THE EFFECT OF ALUMINUM ON BIOCHEMICAL PARAMETERS RELATED TO BONE METABOLISM. A MODEL STUDY OF HEMODIALYSIS PATIENTS

The influence of aluminum on some serum parameters related to bone metabolism has been investigated by daily administration of aluminum over different periods of time. Daily administration of aluminum (1 mg/kg BW) for 20 or 50 days elevated serum phosphorous concentration by 16 percent and had no significant effect on serum calcium level. When aluminum was injected as a complex with citric...

Metabolic responses to cardiac hypoxia. Increased production of succinate by rabbit papillary muscles.

In oxygen-deprived heart muscle tissue, alanine levels increase, whereas levels of glutamate and aspartate decline, and it is therefore postulated that free tissue amino acids participate in the metabolic response to cardiac hypoxia. Succinate is a hypothetical end product of anaerobic metabolism of glutamate and aspartate. To test this hypothesis in vitro isolated right ventricular papillary m...

I27. the Oxidation of Pyruvate by Heart Muscle

BRAuN-MENENDEZ et al. [1939], working with heart-lung and isolated heart preparations, have shown that pyruvate can be utilized by the mammalian heart. Minced heart muscle, as will be seen later, oxidizes pyruvate at about the same rate as the intact heart, and it was used in the present work for a study of the mechanism of the oxidation of pyruvate. The object of the investigation was to deter...
